What are the Benefits of Indoor Cycling?

According to the U.S. Department of Health ".....regular physical activity substantially reduces the risk of coronary disease, stroke, colon cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure.....and helps to control weight, contributes to healthy bones, muscles and joints... reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression..." Need we go on? Cycling is also "low-impact" without the joint stress that you get from "ground-pounding" sports and activities. All good reasons to strap-in/clip-on and RYDE!

Be Your Own Valentine! – Heart Rate Training and a Special for You

-Dawn Wolfe

“Training for Life” isn't just about looking great in those new jeans. (Though we certainly congratulate you on reaching any healthy weight-loss goals you choose!) The more important issue, though, is training for our overall health both now and in the future – and, among other things, that means training and strengthening our hearts.

What is heart rate training all about?

As you probably know, our hearts are muscles just like our quadriceps, our glutes, and our biceps. But unlike those other muscles, letting our hearts get “flabby” and out of shape puts us at much higher risk for negative health consequences like heart attacks and strokes. That's what cardio exercise is for – not just to burn the fat from the rest of our bodies, but to keep our hearts in great shape as well. At RydeOn!, our indoor cycling classes are all about heart rate training -- achieving and maintaining your target heart rate for long enough that your heart gets a good workout.

To get the best workout for your heart you want to get it working at between 40-85% of your maximum heart rate during our indoor cycling classes and whatever other workouts you're doing. To calculate your target heart rate, first find your maximum heart rate (or Hrmax) by subtracting your age from the number 220. Then multiply

PolarWatch

that final figure by 40% and 85% – those final figures are your ideal target heart rate when you're working out.

If you want to calculate your target heart rate without dealing with the math, The Mayo Clinic offers a heart rate calculator here.
